About Fear Her Wrath
Fear Her Wrath is a novel series by James Murnau, a history teacher living in East Appalachia. The story falls broadly into the capepunk and decopunk genres, as a postmodern deconstruction of superhero stories that nonetheless pays loving tribute to the adventures of Batman, the Shadow, and other masked adventurers of the 1920s and 1930s. Its setting is deliberately anachronistic: a modern city that strangely resembles a Prohibition-era metropolis and is crawling with characters that blur the distinction between the early 20th century and the early 21st.
The author’s wife insists it’s just a teen drama with pretensions of being a superhero story, written by a nerd who likes the 1920s a little too much. She’s probably right.
Besides the latest chapters of Fear Her Wrath, this Substack includes frequent blog posts on the culture of the Jazz Age. Topics include silent films, ‘20s and ‘30s-inspired music, old-time radio, and the pulps.
